When is too old? Apr 29

I was talking with some friends last week about style. I dinstinctly recall making a deal in high school with my friend Kacie that if we saw each other when we got older out of style and/or "frumpy" and/or too "mommyish", we would tell one another. (By the way, Kacie, you're as far from that as possible!). Anyways, so I made the comment last week that part of having more birthdays (we were celebrating a friend's b-day over lunch) is continuing to stay hip. I then changed my wording to the word classy. Now I'm thinking what I really mean is staying stylish in a hip and classy way. By that I mean while you as a twenty or thirty-something need not be incredibly trendy and try to match the look of the college girls, you must stay up to date with what it is in and not get stuck in a rut. Anways, all that to say, I want to move to another aspect of style and that is to hair. When are you too old to have "long" hair? By "long" I mean a bit past your shoulders but not flowing down your back if that makes sense. I ask that question because I recently and gradually chopped my hair and while I really love the cut, I notice that I always end up not wearing it down. So that gets me to thinking why do I not just grow it out again because while I'm not sure if early 30s is too old to have long hair, I  do know that one must be very careful in wearing long hair into their late 30s and beyond...don't get me wrong, it has been done and it is being done for sure in the most lovely ways. You've just got to be careful. So, here's the scenario: if I start growing my hair out now, it will take almost 1 1/2 to 2 years to really get it that long again....at that point I'll be very close to 30. Is that too old?

Ok, first of all... my biggest fear is that I come back from this country and am so far removed that I no longer can relate to my own culture. It has been proven many times... especially with clothes. On the other hand I think it would be kind of funny too. So we will have to wait and see on that one. Second, as for hair.. my hair is extremely long right now and I don't think there is a time limit. I know we used to talk about this fascinating topic all the time.. My mind is completely made up- do whatever you want to do with your hair. Take hollywood for example, Half of the famous people are over 30 and even 40 and rock long hair. So I say if they can do it why can't we!! Ex's include Jennifer Aniston, Meg Ryan, Sarah Jessica Parker (to name a few).. Sorry so long.. had a lot to cover. P.s. Savannah is so cute.. read the whole thing.

Laurin, I think you might be worrying needlessly over this. I've never heard of anyone in their 30's being careful about hair length. In fact I wish more women in their 50's and 60's would keep their hair longer instead of the grandma 'do. I plan-on wearing my hair in whatever way looks best and I like for as LOOONG as I want! =)

I agree. Wear it long for as long as you want. You will wear it well, girl! Courtney cox is another good example of Hollywood long hair...although I haven't seen a pic of her lately so it may have changed.

Okay, Laurin, now you've got me self-conscious about my hair being long! I'm already in my 30s--am I out of date? Just kidding. I do know what you're saying. I was actually thinking about that on Saturday when I was in the beauty salon getting my hair cut. The lady next to me seemed to have all elderly clients. And they all had that same grandma cut. And they all had it styled exactly the same way. (You know, horizontal curls with a 1 inch barrel going across the head, and then you tousle and spray. It stays good for a week until your next appointment.) Anyway, as I sat there watching her, I was wondering if when I'm older I'll wind up getting my hair cut like that and if I do whether it will be because I feel too old to have it long or because I just don't have the energy to style it. My thoughts are as long as you have the will and energy to keep up with long hair, you should have it long. But once it starts looking stringy and greasy, it's time to chop it off. Besides, you can always wear it up in a little old lady bun.

Don't be self-conscious. I'll be 30 towards the end of '09 and I don't plan on any changes to my long hair length =) Sometimes you do have to work harder at it, but I think it's true that you typically see older people with short hair and a lot of times it makes them look older than they have to. Then again, I think it's the whole package and what you were saying about style, Laurin. Short hair can be as youthful as long, depending on the style. Same with apparel. Style is key.

i think the new generation of old people is starting to veer away from the traditional "barrel roll" that Brandi described above. i'm starting to see more and more attractive hairstyles into the sixties. that should give us all hope!

i think it's hilarious that so many of us want to weigh in on this issue! grow it out! just think about it this way - if 40 is the new 30 and 30 is the new 20, 28 must be the new 18! you have ACRES of time before you need to worry! (plus, worrying just causes wrinkles and we're much too young for those too, right?!?)

Hah! I didn't mean to sound self-conscious or worried when I wrote this, but I guess I did...anyways, great thoughts just wanted you all to know that I'm not losing sleep over the issue. Definitely losing sleep these days, but not over hair. It's fun to think a/b though and to read your thoughts too.
